Our update from the Laverton Cycling Project in May!
Partner Spotlight.
A heartfelt thank you to WestCycle for their generous support this month. Their contribution helped facilitate our bike riding sessions and provided educational materials that made it easier to introduce physics concepts in a fun, engaging way through bike-related activities. WestCycle’s support made a real difference, and we’re incredibly grateful. Learn More
Program coordinator, Sabine Bird, sent us this update following her monthly visit to Laverton.
“In Laverton, we ran 3 after-school sessions that were well-attended despite high exhaustion levels and sore legs the next day. They certainly got their exercise in for the week, and learned a bit about stamina!
In Cosmo Newberry, we introduced the words “physics”, “chemistry,” and “biology” to the youngest ones and even gently explored the importance of forward movement to counteract the force of gravity. In Mulga Queen, we even dropped the term “Atom”, to enlighten children that air is not just empty space… However, playing tricks on the bikes and riding around for fun was hard to beat. Their enthusiasm for these bikes is huge and always accompanied by the excitement for fresh fruits. We love these crowds…
Further, we started exploring options for getting adults involved in a CDF-led health & well-being education program. The community appreciated the conversation about this very much; stay tuned in this space.”
A note from Brad Hall, CDF Board Director:
“What began over 8 years ago as a 2-week pilot has become a year-round commitment to Laverton. In a town where connection matters deeply, cycling has proven to be more than just exercise – it’s a pathway to health, autonomy, and belonging. Our role is to support these connections, working alongside local groups to create lasting impact. Thank you to all who make this possible – your support helps sustain one of Australia’s longest-running remote cycling programs.”
