ProVelo Super League Round 5: Grafton to Inverell Classics

Round 5 of the ProVelo Super League brought the team to one of the most demanding races on the domestic calendar, with the Grafton to Inverell Classic testing riders across long distances, repeated climbing, and highly selective racing.

As one of Australia’s toughest one-day races, the event provided another rare opportunity for our athletes to experience the demands of racing under real fatigue, where positioning, timing, and decision-making become increasingly important deep into the race.

In the women’s Kennards Hire Mount Mitchell to Inverell (110km, 1,000m+ climbing), Talia and Miriam both made the front group behind two solo breakaways multiple times coming into the finish. Talia finished 18th, with Miriam 23rd, continuing to show steps in the right direction at this level.

A highlight from the race was Indiah Coupland, who, as an under-19 rider, must apply for special dispensation to race this distance. Indiah made it through the full distance and finished in a strong group, handling a step up in race demands really well.

The men’s Squadron Energy Grafton to Inverell (230km, 3,500m climbing) was shaped by the major climb of the day, the 16km Gibraltar Range climb,  where the race became increasingly selective before splitting over the top in crosswinds. Brenton rode strongly across the full duration of the race to finish 23rd, just ahead of a group at the line in Inverell.

Our race was impacted by a crash involving Connor and Matt at the base of the main climb, affecting several riders at a pinch point of the event. Connor was taken to hospital as a precaution but has since returned to training.

Both teams backed up the following day at the Lake Inverell circuit criterium, where riders were able to apply their learnings on a fast and technical purpose-built criterium circuit. Brendon and Matt May finished well for the men, while the women gained further experience across a challenging circuit.

Across the weekend, we saw strong periods of racing along with more clear learning opportunities in what is proving to be a demanding environment, perfect for our developing athletes. The squad now moves on to Round 6 of the Provelo Super League, with the Q Tour set to begin in Brisbane on Friday this week.
