Our update from the Laverton Cycling Project in February!
A special thanks goes out to the team at Graveleur this month. We are grateful for your support and excited to work together throughout 2026. Have a look at some of the most exciting off-road events Australia has to offer here!
Compared to January, the town is back to its usual rhythm. School has returned, kids are back in town, and we have recommenced our visits to the Mulga Queen and Cosmo Newberry communities.
We also brought some newly donated bikes from our supporters, which were a hit straight away.
With the school year underway, the program has recommenced regular engagement with the local school as well as visits to surrounding communities such as Cosmo Newberry and Mulga Queen. These visits allow young people from neighbouring communities to take part in riding sessions while also connecting with activities available when they are in Laverton. In one instance this month, students visiting from Cosmo were able to combine their swimming sessions in town with time on the bikes in between.
Back in Laverton, our afternoon rides again brought the usual energy; plenty of kids, plenty of bikes, and warm temperatures. The sessions are energetic and often chaotic in the best possible way. To keep things enjoyable for everyone, we are increasingly splitting riders into smaller groups, allowing older kids to take on slightly more challenging rides while younger riders stay closer to town.
Because of the warm temperatures, we kept some riding sessions shorter and headed to the pool afterwards for a cool down. It’s a facility we are trying to utilise more while it’s still open. Many of the younger children cannot access the pool without adult supervision, so we often act as the adult guardian for them while they are there. It’s a simple way to help them participate in activities further to the bike riding sessions.
Beyond the day-to-day bike riding sessions, the Laverton Cycling Project continues to play an important role in connecting different parts of the community.
Planning is also underway for several community initiatives throughout the year. Early discussions have begun around Laverfest activities, with local cultural organisation Pakaanu confirming involvement in a community cultural day. Preparations are also beginning for NAIDOC Week, bringing together local organisations to support community-led celebrations.
The program continues to strengthen its network of local partners as well. Community supporters remain engaged with the project and discussions are underway with the Laverton Community Resource Centre to pilot a series of health and wellbeing sessions later in the year.
On a very positive note, the Shire of Laverton has confirmed it will continue to financially support our program for the next three years. This partnership is immensely appreciated and provides important stability for the program moving forward.
While bikes remain the centrepiece of the Laverton Cycling Project, these activities increasingly create opportunities for connection between young people, families, schools and local organisations across the region.
New year, new goals, and new challenges. We are looking forward to what we can achieve this year.
Enjoy the photos, and thank you to our entire group of supporters.
