Laverton Cycling Project: March Update

Program coordinator Sabine Bird sends us her latest update from the Laverton Cycling Project, with another strong month of work throughout Laverton and the surrounding communities of Cosmo Newberry and Mulga Queen.

After school sessions in town continue to draw big numbers, with large groups of kids on bikes bringing plenty of energy (and chaos in the best way). The consistency of these sessions is a key marker of the program’s impact. It’s clear how much the kids value the opportunity to ride, connect, and be active.

Out in Cosmo Newberry and Mulga Queen, numbers were smaller this month, but sessions still delivered meaningful engagement. In both communities, a friendly local dog joined in on the rides, adding an unexpected layer of excitement and helping create a relaxed, enjoyable environment for everyone involved. Moments like these help shape our sessions into something that feels local, familiar, and fun.

Beyond riding, the program continues to play an important role within the broader community.

This month, the team attended a cross-cultural open afternoon at the local art gallery, where Foodbank WA and Thread Together were distributing food and clothing to community members. The kids rode down to attend, and it became a valuable opportunity not just for them, but for local stakeholders and organisations to connect, share ideas, and align on future initiatives in Laverton.

Looking ahead, preparations are underway for opur program’s first health and well-being seminar, a new initiative for 2026 aimed at engaging adult members of the community. This marks an important step as the project continues to expand its impact beyond youth engagement and into broader community support.

We continue to adapt to different challenges, stay consistent with delivery, and look for ways to improve what we’re doing on the ground.

Supporting the Project Through Graveleur

In 2026, Graveleur is supporting the Laverton Cycling Project through their national event series, connecting the Australian gravel community directly with the work we are delivering in Laverton.

The next event on the calendar is the Thunderbolts Adventure (10th Anniversary):

24–26 April 2026 | Gloucester, NSW

“Australia’s longest-running gravel monument, Thunderbolts, brings riders together for a weekend built around adventure, community, and shared experience, including an ANZAC Day dawn service, a full day on the bike, and a post-ride celebration.”

Riders can choose from multiple course options:

  • The Monument: 173km / 3,526m elevation
  • The Colt: 93km / 1,460m
  • The Remington: 46km / 602m

Entries are open now, with discounted team and family entry options.

Importantly, riders have the option to directly support the Laverton Cycling Project when entering any Graveleur event. Funds raised contribute to:

  • Maintaining and repairing bikes
  • Delivering consistent riding sessions
  • Expanding engagement across Laverton, Cosmo Newberry, and Mulga Queen
  • Supporting new initiatives such as health and well-being programs

This partnership creates a direct link between participation and impact, turning bike workshops for the kids into tangible outcomes for communities where access to sport and equipment is limited..

Thank you to all of our supporters for continuing to make this possible. Please enjoy this month’s photos below.
