SMEC once again backs the Laverton Cycling Project

The Cycling Development Foundation (CDF) are excited to announce SMEC as a major partner for the Laverton Cycling Project for 2022-2023. SMEC have been seminal to the establishment of this program which assists Indigenous, Youth and Community through cycling related programs aimed at improving health, well-being and mentoring in the greater Laverton area. This most recent partnership is part of a long term commitment to health programs in the Laverton area through SMEC’s socially conscious vision for communities.

Barry Wilson of SMEC outlined the importance of the program:

“I am very excited that SMEC will be continuing the long term support of the Laverton Program through The Cycling Development Foundation. ”

“SMEC has supported this fantastic event from the beginning; and we have seen the results through continued promotion; fund raising and the subsequent support this provides to the Children.  Not only does this event grow; so do the children with the activities through cycling that improves health and well-being and connects communities from all over the country.”

SMEC will be doing more than just financially supporting the Laverton Cycling Project in 2022, Mr Wilson will also be participating in the ride.

“We will be committed to cycling 1176km in 8 days to raise funds; I will need all the support I can get too!”

CDF Chair, Mary Tennant, was thankful of SMEC’s ongoing support:

“It is with enormous gratitude that the Cycling Development Foundation (CDF) announce sponsorship from SMEC who have supported the Laverton Cycling Project ( LCP) from its inception and continue to do so. SMEC’s sponsorship has contributed towards the costs of conducting cycling programs for members of the Laverton community.
2022 has seen the program grow to such an extent that we have been able to employ a competent coach to travel to Laverton on a monthly basis. This means the Laverton Cycling Project has a consistent presence in the Laverton community which simply would not be possible without this incredible support.
Our annual charity ride the Perth Laverton Cyclassic has continued to attract more cyclists each year and Barry Wilson Area Manager for SMEC has been a keen participant of the event and will join us again in 2022.”

The 2022 edition of the Chamber of Minerals & Energy WA Perth to Laverton Cycling Classic takes place between September 24 and October 4 and will feature 25 riders covering an average of 150km a day.

The 2021 event raised nearly $100,000, after initially targeting a total of $57,500.

The Cycling Development Foundation exists to raise capital and funding to provide support and resources for growing the base of cycling, particularly the development of the junior and women’s fields. The CDF facilitates this via partnerships with various socially conscious corporations to deliver tangible benefits to their employees, associates and communities beyond sporting outcomes alone.
