The Ride

Riders will set out from Busselton to ride 300km over two days 26 – 28 May, 2017. Riders include members of parliament from the major political parties, union and industry leaders and representatives from business and community foundations.

Along the way the group will be raising money to help the victims of domestic violence in the region as well as heightening public awareness.

All net profits from the Ride Against Domestic Violence will go to five women’s refuges to help victims at Starick Services, South West Refuge, Tuart House (Communicare), Pat Thomas House and Zonta House.

The final 30km stage of the ride from Armadale to Perth, will be open to the public. Supporters will be able to register for the stage for $59.

The facts

Statistics show that an average of two women a week are killed by an “intimate” partner in Australia. In Western Australia, 156 women have died from family violence in the past decade. The number of reportable family violence assaults in Western Australia increased by almost 77 per cent between 2009 and 2014. Women and children are overwhelmingly the victims of this kind of violence. Even allowing for an increased readiness of victims to report family violence assaults, it is an ongoing crisis.

To participate in the ride, each rider contributes a registration and fundraising component. We will also host a fundraising event prior to the ride.

Important funding can make a real difference in the provision of services for victims of domestic violence. At Zonta House:

  • $30 buys workbooks for education workshops
  • $100 pays for a counselling support session for a woman who has experienced trauma.
  • $150 allows Zonta to provide teachers/trainers for up to 14 women in rejuvenating classes such as art, cooking or yoga
  • $200 covers accommodation for a woman in our refuge/transitional accom for a week
  • $500  If 6 people contribute $500 we can run a job readiness course for 14 women
  • $10,000 generosity will fully pay for two education workshops

Cycling Development Foundation

Through its service provider, the exercise institute and sponsor Vault Cycle Services, the CDF will support and deliver the event coordination, logistics, rider training and support and promotion of fundraising initiatives. Member of our senior and junior race teams will participate in the final stage and support the 18 riders home.

The community event is a great way for cycling to give back to the community about an issue that many of us can relate to, and an issue that impacts on many women and their families.
